Best Christmas movies

The Polar Express

With “The Polar Express” cinema renews its magic once again. A prodigy of images and colors, a wonderful whirlwind of emotions and breathtaking scenes, of touching and inspired characters, a prodigy of technique and feeling that reconcile us with this extraordinary miracle that is cinema. Polar Express takes us through the existential folds of a boy who is in limbo, forced between the deification of his infantile virtue and the contamination imposed by knowledge, in short, he understands well that the North Pole is a totally uninhabited place and that Santa Claus is only a shadow that vanishes behind the ajar doors.

Home Alone

Home Alone is a 1990 film written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus. We are in Chicago. Here a large American family, the McCallisters, decide to spend the Christmas holidays in Paris. The youngest of their children, Kevin ( Macaulay Culkin ), is constantly laughed at and scolded by family members. Even the night before his departure, after an argument with his older brother, he is sent to sleep in the attic as punishment. The next morning there is total chaos in the crowded house and, in the rush to miss the plane, the McCallister parents do not realize until the plane takes off that they have forgotten something, or rather, someone: Kevin.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Released in 1993, Nightmare Before Christmas has now taken on the role of a commercial phenomenon of rather vast proportions (especially in Japan where, for years, a real craze has been going on and in Tokyo’s shopping malls you can find a plethora of inspired gadgets to the film), so much so that, perhaps, the sense of the story of the King of Halloweentown has been lost a bit. Jack Skellingtonnow it appears, in spite of itself, on the sweatshirts and hanging on the ears of those unbearable emo who have now invaded the streets of Italian cities; has become the banner of a subculture that has nothing to offer apart from the massive use of eyeliner and the embarrassing blinker bangs that give this kind of people only one noteworthy quality, that is, the ability to walk even with the full field of vision obscured by forced trichosis.

Christmas with the Kranks

Christmas with the Kranks tells the story of the Kranks family. Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis) is married to Luther (Tim Allen). Their daughter, Blair, leaves at the end of November to volunteer in Peru. Immediately after her departure, the first preparations for Christmas begin which, however, will not be the same without her. Nora and Luther live in an affluent residential neighborhood reminiscent of the McCallisters in Mommy I Missed a Plane. Here, however, unlike the classic for children, no one goes on holiday for Christmas. The whole neighborhood remains in the city, dedicating itself to gifts, parties, cooking, decorations and, more generally, to tradition.

Christmas movies on Netflix

A Christmas Prince

A Christmas Prince: John Schultz’s Royal Wedding is the second installment of Netflix’s A Christmas Prince Christmas saga. Given that the first chapter had been a great success (and for good reason), Netflix decided as usual to lengthen the stock by creating two new sequels, one of which is Royal Wedding. No one absolutely felt the need for another film copied from the first, but Netflix still wanted to exploit the wave of popularity by giving us a useless sequel. A Prince for Christmas: Royal Wedding sees Amber, the protagonist, struggling with the preparations for the wedding with Prince Richard. Amber, however, fails to recognize herself in this overly traditional marriage and therefore she will have to fight until the last second to be able to fix the situation. To make her worse, among other things, there is the news of the incessant loss of money from her kingdom, which is why Amber and her friends will have to do a thorough investigation.

The Princess Switch

Netflix continues to pump original Christmas movies, and The Princess Switch is their latest offering. With Vanessa Hudgens of Second Act and High School Musical fame, the premise of this film is beyond simple. Stacy De Nova is a Chicago-based baker who is invited to an international pastry contest in a fictional European country that always appears in this type of film. A Christmas prince anyone ?? She initially she is reluctant, due to the fact that she is hoping to rekindle with her ex of hers. When she sees him in love with his new girlfriend, he throws all caution to the wind and walks away.

A Boy Called Christmas

At the beginning of November we were surprised by the great success of Love Hard, a classic romantic Christmas comedy, so now we shouldn’t be too surprised that  A boy called Christmas has entered the top 10. of the most viewed content on Netflix this early December. The protagonist of the film is Henry Lawfull, a very young actor making his great debut. But in A Child Named Christmas, there are several names known to viewers. In the first minutes of the film, for example, an actor with a familiar face appears on the scene, but then he is no longer seen: it is therefore easy not to find an answer to the question “where have I already seen the actor who is a father-widower of the three boys to whom the elderly aunt tells the whole story?

The return to the almost artisanal dimension is perfect for telling the story of Klaus. The characterization of the characters, the angular environments, the use of lights and colors recall the Burtonian atmosphere and that of the Disney classics of the 90s. Jesper (voiced by Jason Shwartzman) is the son of the director of the postman academy: breakfast in bed, silky sheets and fruit cocktails are the only passions he manages to cultivate. In short, our protagonist is nothing more than a spoiled, lazy and presumptuous who likes to swing in the hammock all day.

Funny Christmas movies

Last Christmas

The idea of a film inspired by George Michael ‘s song Last Christmas (as reported in the credits) is not exactly the best, luckily there is Emma Thompson at the script (and even in a small role) and the harmless hand of Paul Feig directing to limit the damage. The story set up to trace the song is that of a girl on average unlucky and not very organized, like many dreams of being a singer but in reality she barely keeps herself working all year in a Christmas shop (and always dressed as an elf).

Deck the Halls

Deck the Halls, comedy film directed by John Whitesell, follows the stories of Steve Finch (Matthew Broderick) and Buddy Hall (Danny DeVito), two neighbors who will find themselves bickering during the Christmas period. Buddy, who is an ophthalmologist by profession, is a huge fan of Christmas and looks forward to this holiday all year to do all the things that tradition requires: decorating his home in every detail, taking the family photo taking care of the perfection in the details, to have all the delicacies of the Christmas Eve dinner.

The Night Before

The Night Before is about three childhood friends, Ethan (Gordon-Levitt), Isaac (Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) who reunite for their annual reunion on Christmas Eve dedicated to crazy joy, one last time before. who are ready to give it up because they have become too “adults”. And precisely because it will be the last, they want to make it as memorable as possible, and that is why they go in search of the famous Nutcracka Ball, the most coveted party of the entire holiday period.

Office Christmas Party

Josh Gordon and Will Speck deliver us a goliardic and wild Christmas-themed comedy, which runs smoothly and smoothly like (perhaps) only American blockbusters can. Between a chase, a fight, a bump (lots of bumps), alcohol, drugs and sex to the rhythm of disco music, The party before the parties moves through the ups and downs of a plot that fails to emerge from a widespread flatness basically. The pace is fast, the screenplay calibrated ad hoc, but there is too much a narrative gear that always seems to accompany the comic peaks with a peek or a little elbow, and lavishly prepared with too much, of everything. The film can count on a cast with very high potential, presenting a varied palette of characters each ready to intercept the comic ball as soon as space arises, yet the risky mash-up is broken up and not as effective as it could have been.

Family Christmas movies

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

The story of Clara, after all, is that of Alice and Dorothy, the protagonists of Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz: girls who are in a phase of growth, of passage in their own lives, who find themselves passing into another world, which is at the same time a test to be faced, a challenge to be overcome, and the metaphor of that delicate moment of ride. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms also tells us about a teenager who needs to find answers, to find the key to her heart and her identity, to find her place in the world (in the fantastic one and then find it in the real one). It tells us about the desire of a lonely girl to feel like a princess, but basically to feel, simply, important to someone.

The Grinch

The Grinch talks to children and shows good feelings: the importance of family and community and how words are the most powerful means to change. The narrative slips lightly and ample space is left for the intimacy of the characters, what they feel and what they think. Although the Grinch’s best friend, trusty dog Max, is involved in funny gags, the slapstick language of the Illumination doesn’t stand out for its brilliance as in The Secret Life of Pets or Despicable Me. Compared to previous films from the production house, The Grinch  has higher ambitions. In fact, it seeks a field of confrontation with the Disney  classics that have related to fairy tales, trying to enter the hearts of children and not just entertain them.

The Christmas Chronicles

The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix is brilliant. From start to finish the pace is lightened and absolutely action packed. Everything is amazing. The story goes that Christmas was a big deal in their home. Unfortunately their father died earlier in the year and the spirit almost disappeared from the family. With their mom working through time and the kids arguing all the time, things are pretty grim for the kids. Kate decides to try and catch Santa on video. Reluctantly agreeing to help her, Teddy arranges things so that when Santa makes an appearance and the trigger goes off, the kids are primed and ready to catch the big man on camera.

Christmas Wish

New proposal from the  A Cinderella Story series originally written by Leigh Dunlap, the Christmas chapter released in 2019 is a new variation on the theme of one of the most famous and metaphorically prolific fairy tales ever. In this case, the protagonists of  A Cinderella Story – Christmas Wish are the fifth couple to face the vicissitudes narrated by the saga in which the young Kat Emerson plays the role of a modern Cinderella. In fact, the girl finds herself in a situation that is not at all desirable to others: mistreated by her stepmother, she arranges between luck jobs and her dreams of success as a singer-songwriter.

Top Christmas movies

Arthur Christmas

To deliver his gifts in a single night, Santa has set up a technologically advanced operation: an army made up of a million elves, a huge supersonic sleigh and a vast control center located under the ice of the North Pole. Four Christmases

It is simply a story that describes the anxiety of spending the holiday season with the family for the couple formed by Brad and Kate, young high-ranking people from San Francisco. Brad ( Vince Vaughn ) and his partner Kate ( Reese Witherspoon ) relax each year with a wonderful exotic vacation, in order not to spend Christmas with their respective crazy families. For the first time, however, the two are forced to change programs in spite of themselves, when a sudden fog bank prevents their plane from taking off for Fiji and a local TV shows them among the passengers who have been stranded at the San Francisco airport.

Mixed Nuts

A friendly phone in the Californian Venice, threatened with eviction on Christmas Eve, is visited by a bustle of crazy, depressed, crackpots, including a Santa Claus husband of J. Lewis, who ran away from home to escape his intermittent violence. The screenplay of the sisters Nora and Delia Ephron is loosely based on that of Père Noël est une ordure (1982) by Jean-Marie Poiré, written by the Splendid team. As 9 out of 10 times happens to European comedy transplants in Hollywood, the remake of this black farce goes in vain. Find comedians and low-battery characters, uncomfortable actors.

City Lights

City Lights is a 1931 silent film starring, written, directed and produced by Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin with his usual mastery makes fun of the rich, their vices and defects and at the same time exalts the true wealth of simple people, based on generosity. In this film too he alternates moments of high comedy with moments of profound melancholy and drama with inimitable ability. A vagabond lives in hardship, but ultimately also with infinite hope for a better future, his daily poverty; in a night spent at the pier, only apparently like many others, he saves the life of an aristocrat who wants to commit suicide at sea because he is left by his wife.

Christmas horror movies

The Krampus, a legendary creature linked to Germanic folklore and represented as a real demon, dark incarnation of the shadow of Santa Claus, has always haunted horror cinema, with a peak of productions dedicated there that have flourished like snowflakes particularly in the last years. The most successful title is definitely Krampus – Christmas isn’t always Christmas, unexpected success with overseas audiences distributed directly by us for the home video market. Better Watch Out

Better Watch Out is a 2016 Australian horror film directed by Chris Peckover and starring Levi Miller,  Olivia DeJonge and  Ed Oxenbould. Silent Night

Silent Night, the surprising debut behind the film by British Camille Griffin (presented at the Toronto Film Festival and then in Sitges) tackles an extremely difficult subject, a paradoxical environmental disaster, in a shrewd, extremely ironic and at the same time deeply shocking and moving way. Strange to say, the film opens up like a regular Christmas comedy. Eve is approaching and a group of friends intend to celebrate together in a beautiful villa in the English countryside. Nell (Keira Knightley) hurries her preparations before her guests arrive. In the kitchen, Art (Roman Griffin Davis, true son of the director, as well as the twins) slices the carrots, while her mother prepares the beds in the guest rooms. Outside, her husband Simon (Matthew Goode) chases the chickens in the yard and the twins Thomas (Gilby Griffin Davis) and Hardy (Hardy Griffin Davis) play in the woods behind the house, escaping as much as possible bathroom and preparations.

Rand Peltzer, inventor, has found a perfect Christmas present for his son Bill: a cute and funny little mogwai. To breed it, it is enough to respect three rules: do not expose it to sunlight, do not give it food after midnight and never give it water. Christmas Disney movies

A Christmas Carol

The movie is an adaptation of Charles Dickens 1843 novel “A  Christmas Carol”, certainly one of the oldest and most moving Christmas stories of all time. Directing “A Christmas Carol” is  Robert Zemeckis who returns in 2009, following his  2004 Polar Express. Production is handled by  Walt Disney Pictures  and  ImageMovers Digital. The film is shot in  CGI  using the  performance capture technique. Jim Carrey  plays the role of the protagonist  who, however, does not limit himself to interpreting the old stingy Ebenezer Scrooge but also lends his face to the three spirits present in Dickens’ story. Prep & Landing

The protagonists of the series are Lanny and Wayne, two elves of the “control and landing” unit. Their job is to precede Santa and inspect the homes of children around the world before he arrives. There are, of course, small and large setbacks that risk jeopardizing the celebrations.

Until something goes wrong. Elsa is unable to control her power and ends up hurting her little sister who, brought by the mountain trolls, is saved but not without a price: Anna no longer remembers anything about the accident and the powers of Elsa that, when the two remain alone when their parents die, she locks herself in her quarters without ever leaving, isolating herself to prevent the magic inside from harming others.
